Title: Census County Statistical Data, 2000

Originator:  U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census

Abstract:

The 2000 census county statistics are demographic, social, economic and housing characteristics from Summary File 1 and Summary File 3. The maps provide data for the United States, the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The statistics are for a county or statistical equivalent entity, with the coverage area based on the Census 2002 TIGER/Line governmental unit boundaries.

The demographic data are extracts from Summary File 1 (SF 1) which focus on the information collected on the census short form – namely on age, sex, race, Hispanic/Latino origin, households, families, housing units, and owner/renter status.

The social, economic and housing data are extracts from Summary File 3 (SF 3) which focus on social, economic and housing characteristics compiled from a sample of approximately 19 million housing units (about 1 in 6 households) that received the Census 2000 long-form questionnaire. Topics include income, education, occupation, ancestry, disability, foreign birth, commuting, household financial arrangements, year housing structure built and many other population and housing subjects.

The Census 2002 TIGER/Line county map represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts. However, each county-based TIGER/Line file is designed to stand alone as an independent data set or the files can be combined to cover the whole nation. The 2002 TIGER/Line files consist of line segments representing physical features and governmental and statistical boundaries. The boundary information in the TIGER/Line files are for statistical data collection and tabulation purposes only; their depiction and designation for statistical purposes does not constitute a determination of jurisdictional authority or rights of ownership or entitlement.
